PASSION FOR PAINTING

I retired 16 years ago (I retired early!!!) and as a "hobby" I decided to follow a dream.  Actually how it came about, was, I was out walking with a friend and said, "I wish I could paint".  She said "why don't you".  I said, "because I can't".  Her answer was "Better to try and fail, than to die without trying at all"  So with that good advice I began my hobby which soon turned into, (my husband calls it a compulsion) my passion for painting.

I loved the look of watercolors and so, I…

New art supplies!

I recently purchased matte medium from Golden and Liquitex brands on dickblick.com. I look forward to experimenting with matte medium. I noticed it is a popular choice of adhesive for art journaling/collage work. So I shall try it out!

Any tips on usage is appreciated. :)

Leap of Faith

I took a giant leap of faith on Wednesday and resigned from what is known around here as the best job within 50 miles of this town.  I was a Veterans' Claims Examiner for the Veterans' Benefits Administration, Muskogee, Oklahoma Regional Office.  Yep, I sure did.  Life is just too short to sit in a cubicle eight hours a day, five days a week.  In the meantime, I was becoming so exhausted that I was losing my creative spark and too tired to play with my kids when I got home.  I have a six and…

How to Tell the Difference Between a Woven and Coiled Basket

I make pine needle baskets, which are coiled, rather than woven. This means they are started from the center bottom of the basket, using damp, dried pine needles with raffia, artificial sinew or other threads and are either started using a small twist or started around an object, like a wood base, and spiraled outward and upward to shape the basket. You can use various core …

How to Make a Native American Styled Basket

Native American style coiled baskets are beautiful and have very intricate designs. Making them are a challenge, but with persistance and patience you can make one too. This is for an experienced basketmaker. If you already know how to make a coiled basket using thread, raffia or sinew, then you can start to create a Native American Style basket. You will also need to know all the different stitches, but you will be using the completely coiled stitch only and switching colors of thread to…

How to Make Collaged Artist Trading Cards

I have been obsessed with Artist Trading Cards (ATC) since I began experimenting with making them a few weeks ago. Here’s what I’ve discovered:

  • ATCs are small works of art, measuring 2 ½ X 3 ½ inches. They are about the size of a baseball or playing card.
  • Anybody can produce ATCs.
  • The goal is to trade them at ATC…

Sketching class

So i am so so new at all this and just kind of threw myself into the painting process, along with doing ALOT of altered art. My question is, i am registered for an Oil class starting 3/19. I wanted to get down to basics and learn strokes, brushes, paints etc etc. I am also considering a sketch class. Now, i have trouble drawing a straight line or a perfect circle. Is one just "born" with the talent of sketching or is this something that can be learned once you know basics? Im on limited…

Thinking about Metatron's Cube

I saw some artwork the other day on Facebook by an artist I admire and he talked about working on the Metatron's Cube in a background he was doing. So I'm looking and looking and I don't see this cube he's referenced in the piece. And then I think I don't know what this Metatron's Cube is. I have been somewhat acquainted with sacred geometry and was especially enthralled with tetrahedrons a long while back. I had one of those folding M.C. Esher books that I loved. One of the first computer…

EVERYONE MAKES IT SO HARD...

So i can start my day saying " ok, im going to work on an oil, or maybe i'll work on my altered journals (i do have a show coming up) but then i come in here (about 5 times a day) and i look at the gallery and i am just amazed everytime. Such beautiful, intense work!! So, there goes my "plan" for the day and i grab yet another medium saying to myself "ok, i cant get that out of my mind, gotta try it". Which is the idea right?? LOL. You all continue to surprise me with all the different…

Another art experiment

The other day, I bought a set of Beinfang Watercolor Brush Pens. When I got them home, I discovered that they are very similar in construction to my waterbrushes.

I like the Beinfang Watercolor Brushes, but they are expensive. I believe they are refillable, but I can't find a source for paint.

Then I found liquid watercolor for use in schools. This stuff looks like it would work. It's inexpensive, but heavy and shipping would more than double the price.

So I… READ MORE
