I m sure this is a common problem with everyone living in small areas. I don't know where to keep my old canvases. I generally buy mounted canvas so I don't have to frame the work till I absolutely must. But since I m still in the process of learning, I have a lot which I can't use again; a lot of silly work on mounted canvas. I just don't know where to keep these. I mean I just can't chuck them in the public waste bin. The kitchen cabinet I use for my art supplies is full and the top of my clothes cabinet is full too. Where do all you guys keep used and useless canvas? Please share..
Comment by Cat Demkiw on February 9, 2013 at 10:11am Wow me too! But what I started doing was to take digital photos of everything and keep them on a CD. I limit my favorite pieces and then I repaint over the ones that I have partial attachment to. And you can always hand from the ceiling I've done that. Mostly family and friends have inherited alot of my initial pieces. Perhaps donate them to a community building. Never know more exposure for you as the artist. Hope that helps baljeet. Have a wonderful day. Sincerely, Cat
Comment by alexis ciccone on February 9, 2013 at 2:32pm I think that's everyone's problem- Cat's idea of donating is a good idea. I also donated my work -truth be known I have many more pieces in my storage place to sell, donate, or give away. Having a small space also I have had to alter the size of my canvases- so I am now painting miniature size abstracts which are doing pretty well. They are priced more reasonable than the bigger pieces so customers go for them a bit quicker. I have also stored some under my bed. Good luck (:
thinking of maybe two things...one repainting as mentioned above...I just gesso over and sometimes texturize the gesso...texture is always fun..the other I have been making my own canvas's stretching canvas over stretcher bars (you can buy them in various sizes and put together)...lots of online tutorials on stretching your own canvas's...then just unstaple them and roll them up...and start again
I have to say, in our small condo...you don't want to move a couch or a dresser, or even the bed....canvas's are stashed everywhere I can find a spot
Comment by baljeet kaur on February 10, 2013 at 10:35pm Great ideas everyone. And Alexis, please donate some of your work to me. I'm sure I can't afford it otherwise. I am a great admirer of your work. The next time u r donating, please think of me. I'll pay the postage :D
I store used canvases everywhere around my three rooms (due to a high ceiling, I made an elevated raft in my study to store paintings and collectibles). Also, if mum likes a particular one, she would force dad to hang it for her. Personally, I find it hard to repaint over an old canvas.
The prospect of donation is good; if these strike the fancy of little children these could go to a peadiatric ward or small clinic; if featuring modern/pop cultural elements, you could always try to convice a bar to hang some for you or a civic center :p
You can also try to sell some works for a cause: like abandoned animals, an animal shelter, a particular ward. Best if you side/contact an organisation that promotes such cause, as there might be some procedures that need to be considered.
How about places of work? yours, family, friends? You can always cheer a place of work/offices, up by donating some pieces to be hung. As long as these are well taken care of and returned to you if need be or if there are any major changes!
You could always give some of your paintings to friends on some festive occassions :) I do that to save some money sometimes.
Comment by alexis ciccone on February 12, 2013 at 5:04pm Hi Baljeet,
You are too kind.
Private message me when you can, ok? or you can email me: acicconeart@ymail.com :)
We store mine in the ceiling until market time, then out they come.
Comment by Ev McTaggart on March 4, 2013 at 9:38am The BEST place to store canvasses is on someone else's walls! Look hard enough and you'll find a coffee shop or other business that's happy to have wall art. Free art for them = advertising for you.
